Survivor’s Guilt

From – Not Unknown

Survivor’s Guilt – A deep sense of guilt, combined often with feelings of numbness and loss of interest in life, felt by those who have survived some catastrophe.

I have heard from a lot of people over the last couple of weeks who, like me, are experiencing survivor’s guilt. My home wasn’t damaged by Harvey. No flooding, no loss of cars or property, no evacuating. I have a deep sense of guilt, and I am not sure what to do with that. I know this sounds like whining and it probably is. However, it is no less real.

I am thankful that I recognize that there is an issue and that I need to do something with it. Combine this with anxiety about finding a job and worry about my father’s health, these are all warning signs. Potential triggers that could lead me into isolation and behaviors I don’t want to revisit again.

Life right now in the Houston area isn’t normal. There are areas that are still impassable. Many people are out of their homes and away from work. In short, lots of short tempers and anxious moments. Normal life is at a standstill. Routine doesn’t really exist. And that can also be detrimental to me as my recovery life has a rhythm, many constants. I haven’t been able to meet with my sponsor or my sponsees. Recovery meetings have been canceled. Our Prodigal recovery worship service hasn’t met. Lots of uncertainty.

I am very aware that God is using this time in my life to teach me to trust Him in EVERY area of my life, including my work. I don’t yet know what that looks like, my work I mean. I do know what trusting Him in my work looks like. I am learning it from His people. Yesterday, I was talking with a guy I know who runs a recruiting firm locally. We have only met a few times but have developed a friendship. He made it clear to me that he knew that God was working in my life to identify where He wanted me to be but it was obvious He hadn’t done so yet. So then he asked to pray for me right then and he did. That was special and welcome enough. He also asked for God to allow him to be a part of what He was doing in my life, to walk beside me through it. Like I said, God keeps showing up and making His presence known.

Last Sunday, our pastor talked about survivor’s guilt. About how he personally was worrying about that. And that God showed up and spoke through his wife. She told him, without prodding, that they had been spared any damage because obviously God needed them to minister to those that did have damage. To comfort those in need and to reach out to those that needed help.

I haven’t done a lot, but God has allowed me to minister some. My youngest son and I have gotten to help my niece move out of a damaged apartment that would have been a health issue for her newborn baby. My wife and I got to volunteer at a food bank at a church we used to attend. I have gotten to reach out to my friends and neighbors and support them however possible whether it be through providing clothes or shelter or whatever else possible. Ministering is good. Living out God’s design is life altering. I know prior to entering what I call recovery, I wouldn’t even have recognized the impact on my friends and family. I am thankful that I know what survivor’s guilt is and that God has a purpose for me in the aftermath of Harvey. He has a purpose for all of us.

Prodigal Worship Service – Saturday, 9/7 at 5:30 pm

Prodigal Recovery Worship Service is Back on Saturday, September 9th!
Welcome back, Prodigals!

Our website is The Prodigals.

We are so excited to have the opportunity to meet again after the devastating impact of Harvey and its aftermath. In the midst of all this tragedy, God has obviously been at work in the lives of so many. We all look forward to a time of worship this Saturday to come together and experience our prodigal God and what He has in store for us.

Just as a reminder:
What to expect: We are not a church, we are a service of recovery and a community of hope. We have an exciting service planned this week.

  • Jackie will be giving her testimony so don’t miss hearing her story of hope and restoration.
  • Sean is delivering the message on “How Can I Help You?”  In this time of tragedy, we have all seen so many people stop focusing on self and start focusing on others. The question is, how do we maintain it? Sean will look at Paul’s transformation as the example on how we can put others first by having Christ work in and through us.

Expect impactful worship songs, a time of celebration and sharing of our milestones, and a testimony of spiritual awakening.

When: Every Saturday starting back on September 9th at 5:30 pm

Location: The Fellowship (in the Loft), 22765 Westheimer Pkwy, Katy, TX 77450

Childcare is available. Pre-notification is not necessary but is requested. For more information about childcare, email us info@theprodigals.org.

Don’t forget to stop in at Kosmos Coffee Shop at the Fellowship before and after service. They are open just for us!

Come home, prodigals! This Saturday

Anxiety and Stress

Keith B – Not Unknown

First, I hope all of you are surviving this difficult time in Houston. I know I don’t have to describe to any of you the stress, anxiety, turmoil that is present in all of our lives right now. This is one of the few times I can use you and we statements to describe the impacts of Harvey on all of our lives and our homes. Whether you have a worst case scenario or you have just been riding out the after effects, we all are balancing the conflicting and overwhelming emotions that have hit us, our families, friends, workplaces. I know one thing and one thing only in this time…He is faithful, even when I am not.

The stress and anxiety started for me personally last week, when I returned to work after a few days off to take my son to college and to care for my dad who is in hospice care in my home state. I got back to work last Monday and started the process of trying to catch up. That’s when my boss came to meet with me and let me know that she had decided that I wasn’t really a good fit for the organization and that she had determined that the company would be separating me. Welcome back!

I wish I could say I was surprised and caught off guard but I really wasn’t. I knew that my working relationship with her wasn’t going well. It wasn’t. It hadn’t since I started about 18 months ago. My first few months there were different from my last year. Because for the last year I have been in recovery. My attitude and focus on work has changed. I started approaching my work and my relationships at work much differently. Specifically, I determined to be rigorously honest, only focused on work when I was at work, and not try to manipulate or lie to anyone. Unfortunately, that had been my primary work mode in the past…lying and manipulating wherever I could for my own benefit.

I found that my work relationship with my boss didn’t improve, despite what I knew to be a change in my working behavior. I came to finally understand that I could only change my own behavior, focus on my own faults and character defects. I realize now that I previously believed that my boss and past bosses didn’t have the same type of issues that I had. That somehow they were fair, truthful and above reproach.

I look now at how I have worked over the past year. I can clearly say that I wasn’t perfect. I can clearly and honestly say that I was transparent, and open, and rigorously honest, and not manipulative. I did good work. I did the best I could. The hard part is it wasn’t enough to remain there, because that isn’t where God intends me to be. I don’t like that, not being in control of my own career and work. But that is how God wants me to be…dependent on him for everything. Turning my life and will over to the care of God…all of it. I haven’t done that yet. Not all of it…but I am moving toward Him. Not away.

I was texting my friend in recovery who had to evacuate his house. Something struck me that he said to me as he asked me and others for help. He said he was thankful that he was in recovery because prior to that he wouldn’t have asked for help. That rings true to me as well. Prior to recovery I would not have openly sought help and guidance for my next steps in my career. Now I am seeking help and guidance from God and the people He has put in my life.

Being known feels dangerous and risky. Being known is terrifying. And being known is how God wants to use my story.

The Men In My Life

The past week has been all about the men in my life. By the men in my life, I mean the two men who have been in my life since the beginning. My father and my older brother (much, much older! Sorry, bro!). It’s taken me almost fifty years to come to a true understanding of the value of these two relationships. This weekend crystallized their importance to me. I know, I am a slow learner.

When I began working with a therapist, exploring the why of how I gradually slid into such a destructive lifestyle, I was forced to look deeply at my own faults and flaws and how they got there. I had to examine my formative years, growing up primarily as the middle of four kids, and what led to my own isolation and hurt. As I did so, I recognized how the relationships with the two men in my life influenced who I was to become.

My father worked. Hard. He owned his own business in a very small town. As a local pharmacist, he was available to people day and night not just as a healthcare worker but as a counselor, friend and confident. I don’t remember a Sunday lunch after church where he wasn’t interrupted at home by a call from someone needing medicine urgently. I don’t recall him ever getting home at night until late. My mother was our primary disciplinarian because of that. And I resented her for it. And him. I wanted his attention, his approval, and his blessing. I ached to be seen. I wanted that relationship with him that my older brother had. The shared interests, time together hunting, eventually the shared military service. I just had a hole where I hoped my father would be and I built a story of not needing him or that relationship.

My brother is five years older than me. Our personalities have always seemed so different. He seemed disciplined and structured. A definite military focus. He pursued a degree in engineering and had a very close relationship with our older sister and her husband. My brother and brother in law were friends and college roommates even before my brother in law and sister married. At the end of my fourth grade year, my brother switched schools from the public to smaller private high school. I switched as well. Unknown to my parents and my brother, the change was traumatic. I went from a larger school with a focus on academics to a much smaller school with a focus on athletics. I was definitely not athletic, which was very obvious to my classmates. The next eight years were difficult and overwhelming. And I retreated into isolation. And unknown to me at the time, I looked toward my brother and father to rescue me. That didn’t happen.

My father is in bad health. He and my mother are now in an assisted living facility. My brother and I have had to work together with my younger sister to intervene for their best interests. Thankfully, this has been a healthy move for them. However, his health is deteriorating. And his memory is slipping away. I can’t reclaim those years of a lack of a relationship with him. But I recognize him for what he is. My father, a good man who loved his family and did all he could to take care of them. He loves my mother. He tells me he loves me and hugs and kisses me every time I see him. And I am thankful for this time we have left.

My brother and I now live about five miles apart. We are friends. He is actually a mentor to me. He has taken the lead in caring for my mother and father. And he and his wife and me and my wife are close. My sons look to him for guidance and as family. Last week he sent me a picture of my dad and his brother. He said he knew of two other guys who had the same kind of relationship that they did. So do I.
