Don Jon

Taken from http://www.theresurgence.com. Author: Mark Driscoll
January 2014

Even sex experts, celebrities, and Hollywood are noting the destructive realities of porn in relationships, and its complete rewiring of how individuals approach sex.

The movie Don Jon has just been released on DVD. It’s a story about a young man frustrated by the effects of porn in his life. I’m not going to watch the film, and I don’t recommend anyone else watch it either, but the story could indicate a subtle reversal in cultural attitudes when it comes to sex and the use of porn.

Has a porn backlash in mainstream culture finally begun?

Porn wreaking havoc in the bedroom

When the movie premiered in the UK, The Telegraph ran a perceptive article that addressed the same issues that the film raises, namely that a porn habit leaves men unable to relate to real women:

There’s a scene in Don Jon . . . in which [a female] character gently breaks it to Jon that the sex they had was, well, not that good. . . . Jon is stunned, mortified, and finally completely confused by his sex life. Because, the truth is, he’s not really enjoying it either. Porn is what he really loves. . . .

Even among more casual users, porn is wreaking havoc in the bedroom. Last year, American GQ’s sex columnist, Siobhan Rosen, complained about the “pornified sex” men seemed to expect—not in a relationship, when trust has been established, but from the very first encounter. . . .

“It’s a disconnection from what’s really in front of you,” says [Joseph] Gordon-Levitt, who directed, wrote and stars in the film. “Rather than engaging with a unique individual and listening to what the other has to say, right at this moment, we put people in boxes with labels. We objectify each other.”

Controlled by our sexual desires

Even sex experts and celebrities are noting the destructive realities of porn in relationships, and its complete rewiring of how individuals—specifically males—approach sex. A recent GQ article offered the statistic that “one in five people who regularly watch porn admitted to feeling controlled by their own sexual desires,” an unhealthy position to be in as men are driven by a desire for sensation rather than a desire for relation.

Has a porn backlash in mainstream culture finally begun?

In his book on pornography, Wired for Intimacy: How Pornography Hijacks the Male Brain, Dr. William Struthers explains how regular external stimulus alters one’s neurological makeup, which is how human beings learn. Consistent exposure to pornographic images actually rewires the brain. Like a tire that gets stuck in a well-worn rut, the brain, in a sense, can be trained and eventually subjected to addictive behaviors.

Learning to drive from Vin Diesel movies

Similarly, psychologist Catherine Steiner-Adair notes in the Telegraph piece that porn has become so prevalent in our culture, it has replaced how young men learn about and understand sex:

“The boys are very confused about how to approach girls,” she says. “Their sexual education is porn. And it’s very misogynistic and violent porn” . . . . The result is mutual unhappiness, frustration and disappointment.

[Porn star] Nina Hartley agrees. “Young people are going to find information wherever they can get it. . . But watching porn to learn to have sex is like watching Vin Diesel movies to learn how to drive. I’m paid to give this performance.”

A porn habit leaves men unable to relate to real women.

As Dr. Struthers writes, “Pornography teaches its students to focus on the physiology of sexual sensations and not on the relationships for which these sensations are intended.” Ultimately porn defiles the concept of intimacy and destroys the original God-glorifying intent for sex. By consistently pursuing pornography, men “have unknowingly created a neurological circuit that imprisons their ability to see women rightly as created in God’s image,” Struthers concludes.

Sin is dead

Don Jon doesn’t promote the whole truth of God’s design for sex, but it does point out that even those in the secular media and entertainment are aware of the dangers of porn. As porn use has rapidly become a social norm, even those without spiritual convictions are beginning to take notice at just how much damage porn can do.

For the Christian guys who are reading this and feeling awful and shameful, I need you to trust that you can put your sin to death because Jesus died for your sin. Jesus went to the cross and scorned your shame so that you can scorn your shame. There is an entire generation of Christian men who are standing on the sidelines feeling disqualified from serving Jesus because they are enslaved to porn. Fight for purity. When you get knocked down, get back up. The fruit of the Spirit includes “self-control” and is possible for you, my brother.

Courage – VIDEO

I love fantasy, but not the fantasy I used to engage in.  This is the genre of fantasy full of dragons, knights, castles, or in this case, Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, Wizards, and Orcs!  As a child I watched the cartoon version of The Hobbit by Rankin and Bass and loved the music and funny characters.  I was then able to read the book and then watch the movies by Peter Jackson.  Nevertheless, it wasn’t until entering recovery that the Holy Spirit gave me some special “recovery glasses” that have allowed me to spot recovery themes in various media; music, movies, photographs, etc…  These themes can include support groups, honesty, courage, selfishness, selflessness, redemption, etc… that are portrayed in the movie.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of The Hobbit Trilogy is one of these movies.  The plot of this movie has been pasted below courtesy of Google:

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is a fantasy novel and children’s book by English author J. R. R. Tolkien.  Set in a time “Between the Dawn of Færie and the Dominion of Men”, The Hobbit follows the quest of home-loving hobbit Bilbo Baggins to win a share of the Dwarven treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug.

I thought the courage exhibited by Bilbo Baggins to go on this dangerous journey was a parallel to the courage it takes to enter and stay in recovery.  Recovery isn’t easy, in fact, it is very difficult.  Therefore, it takes a lot of courage to enter meetings where you finally accept that we are not perfect and we are wounded human beings.

I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed creating it.  As always, take what you like and leave the rest.

Fear Of Rejection

by james tarring cordrey

Men fear rejection.

We hate getting shot down by a girl. We hate getting told ‘no’ by just about anybody. And we hate getting into situations in which it is entirely obvious — or even just our strong perception — that we don’t have what it takes.

Our need to know that we have the right stuff starts early.

As boys we imagined ourselves as heroes of various types. Some grabbed the football and imagined themselves leading the team down the field with time running out to win the Super Bowl.  Some pretended they were hitting a grand slam to win the World Series with the count 3-2 and two out in the bottom of the 9th in Game 7 as the team trailed by 3 runs. Yet others took  a stick, or a plastic weapon of some kind, and created scenarios in which they were soldiers or knights or Jedi vanquishing evil and securing life and freedom for the world.

As we reach manhood physically, if we are emotionally still boys, we have to find a way to fake it. This is where passivity comes in.  We act ‘cool’ and detached as a way of masking our fear of failure and rejection.  We know we are supposed to act, but since we have not actually learned how to take action, we have to create a façade of being self-assured and confident.

The best way to look self-assured is to be so casual about everything that we give the perception that nothing rattles us.  We use passivity as a rouse to give the impression we have everything under control.

The fear of rejection is huge for men because when we are turned down — even when done graciously by someone who legitimately cares about us — we feel naked. We feel exposed as a fraud. The rejection is proof positive that we don’t have what it takes, we say to ourselves.

So passivity is rampant among men these days because we fear rejection, especially in our relationships with women.  Asking a woman on a date opens us up to the possibility of very serious rejection.  If she turns me down, i will feel absolutely exposed as lacking in the one aspect of life that matters so deeply: the ability to win the beauty. The ability to get the girl.

And we desperately want to win the beauty. We ache for it.

So our fear of rejection leads us right to porn and masturbation involving sexual fantasies.

Rejection? Not here.

Countless ‘women’ say ‘yes’ to my advances. Countless scenarios play out in which i have what it takes.

And the beauty? My ache for it is met as i ‘win’ her — and many others — every time.

This is lie we are more than happy to believe.

This reality goes for married men as well as single men. The fear of rejection still rears its ugly head in marriage.  Our wives can shoot us down or criticize us or express their disappointment in us and something inside our souls starts thinking about finding a ‘woman’ who will affirm us 100 percent. And then, after a while, there’s no reason to initiate sex as a husband because there’s an endless supply of porn to look at which will take care of that ache.

But it really doesn’t take care of the ache. This is one reason why porn always fails.

As men we must see that we are more crippled by the Fear of rejection than we are by rejection itself. Hearing someone say ‘no’ to us — especially in a dating or marital situation — is not mortal. We will live to fight another day, as the saying goes. Hearing ‘no’ but then pressing on anyway builds a strength in us as men that makes us true.

Running to porn out of a fear of rejection makes us pale imitations of men.

Cupid’s Poisoned Arrow

Long before the Internet, the father of modern sexology warned of desensitization. Alfred C. Kinsey cautioned his photographer Clarence Tripp that, “As soon as we get you to photographing sex every day and paying attention to sex right, left and center, pretty soon nothing will turn you on, nothing in the area, nothing visual will turn you on. Because you’ll lose all those sensitivities.” In fact, however, desensitization is having a major impact today. The more some people rely on cyber erotica, the more frequently they may feel the “need” to climax, and the more extreme material they often require to get the job done. For many, erections also grow weaker. Escalation and youthful erectile dysfunction are often signs that someone is inadvertently numbing the brain to subtler pleasures. Desensitization is an addiction process related to a drop in dopamine sensitivity. Nora Volkow MD, Director of NIDA, explains, “Once the brain becomes less sensitive to dopamine, it “becomes less sensitive to natural reinforcers” such as the “pleasure of seeing a friend, watching a movie, or the curiosity that drives exploration.” Tragically, the now-less-enjoyable pleasures often include the rewarding feelings of human touch and close, trusted companionship. This is how extreme stimuli can indirectly interfere with our innate pair-bonding tendencies—causing dissatisfied unions. Becoming restless in your relationship due to too much porn use isn’t a character defect. It occurs because too much stimulation causes physical changes in your brain. The good news is that former users can indeed reverse this desensitization. They give their brains a rest from frequent sexual stimulation (sexual fantasy, masturbation, orgasm) and steer clear of porn. It’s tough. Most experience weeks of uncomfortable, temporary withdrawal symptoms, such as mood swings (irritability, anxiety, despair, apathy, restlessness), insomnia, fatigue, very frequent urination, intense cravings or flat libido, etc. How we use our sexual desire appears to have a powerful influence on how loudly we hear our pair-bonding programming. Unlike us, our ancestors weren’t driven by unending, novel erotic visuals to climax beyond normal satiety. They were more likely to allow their brains and bodies to rest and renew themselves. Returning the brain to homeostasis in between passion bouts may turn out to be very healthy for those who want relationships. The greater the brain’s sensitivity to pleasure, the more rewarding we perceive our intimate relationships. From an article by Marnia Robinson & Gary Wilson
