Consequences of Porn Use

Dr. Robert Weiss, author of Out of the Doghouse, is one of the world’s foremost experts on the effects of porn use. His studies have revealed 13 consequences of the frequent use of pornography. These are the percentages of porn users who suffer from specific consequences:

  • Shame: 71%
  • Low self-esteem – 65%
  • Depression, anxiety – 50%
  • Loss of a relationship – 47%
  • Sexual dysfunction – 27%
  • Suicidal thoughts – 19%
  • Sexually transmitted disease – 19%
  • Other health issues – 16%
  • Debt – 15%
  • Impaired parenting – 15%
  • Legal consequences – 6%
  • Loss of employment – 4%
  • Exposure in the media – 1%

Most of us would say, “None of this could ever happen to me.” But as I review this list of 13 consequences, if I’m honest, I must admit that I suffered from nine of these 13.

Here’s the point: “Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful desires will harvest the consequences of decay and death” (Galatians 6:7-8).

Recovery Step: Porn has consequences. Quit today.

Dumb Locusts

Like most of you, my addiction robbed me of a lot of years. When I finally got into recovery, I felt like I would never really know the fullness of God’s blessings again.

For me, it was too late.

Then I came across this gem from the Old Testament. “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten” (Joel 2:25).

That verse could be the mantra for every person in recovery from any addiction. The locusts have eaten so much – our time, relationships, character. Worse yet, we welcomed the locusts into our lives every time we fed our habit. But God gets the final word. 

Life is about finishing strong.

Bear Bryant said, “Winning isn’t imperative, but getting tougher in the fourth quarter is.”

Caleb was a hero at age 85, while Joshua finished his work at 110. So for every reader under the age of 110, I leave you with this promise from God.

“I’m not done yet. The rest of your life will be the best of your life.”

Recovery Step: Never measure the activity of God by what you can see in the moment. The best is yet to come.
