Novak Djokovic is widely considered the greatest tennis player of all time, with a record 24 major tournament championships, and 428 weeks ranked as the #1 player in the world. Among his many accolades is a record you won’t hear much about. Over the totality of his career, Djokovic won the highest percentage of points played of any player who ever picked up a racket. The surprising part is the actual number.
55 percent.
That means that the greatest tennis player of all time still lost 45 percent of his points.
Let that be a lesson to the perfectionist who is living inside of you. While this is not a free pass to sin or relapse, it is important to remember that recovery is about progress, not perfection. Take it from the wisest of the wise. Solomon lamented, “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins” (Ecclesiastes 7:20).
Recovery Step: Go win the next point.
