In 1971, a study was conducted on U.S. soldiers serving in Viet Nam. It was discovered that 20 percent of them became addicted to heroin during their deployment. When they returned home, nearly 80 percent of those addicts quit their habit almost immediately, and they never returned to heroin use again.
On the other hand, studies show that just 10 percent of heroin users in the United States find permanent sobriety after attending a rehab center.
The difference? Changing your environment.
The soldiers returning from Viet Nam were leaving their triggers behind. The world in which they had used drugs was not the world they returned to. But the heroin users who went to rehab returned to the same environment in which they became addicted.
Again, the difference was environment.
Recovery Step: Do you want freedom? Change your environment. “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm” (Proverbs 13:20).
