As a storm raged, the captain realized his ship was sinking fast. He called out, “Anyone here know how to pray?”
One man stepped forward. “Aye, Captain, I know how to pray.”
“Good,” said the captain. “You pray while the rest of us put on our life jackets. We’re one short.”
In life – and recovery – it’s a good thing to know how to pray. In fact, I tell all my clients to pray three prayers three times each day: Serenity Prayer, 3rd Step Prayer, and 7th Step Prayer. But there comes a time when we need to go to work on our recovery. If we don’t, like the guy on that ship, we will eventually drown.
Success comes to those who pray as though it all depends upon God. But then they work as though it all depends upon themselves. The words of James ring true: “Whoever knows the right thing to do, but fails to do it, for him it is sin” (James 4:17).
Recovery Step: You need to know what to do. But mostly, you just need to do what you know.
